{"id":11,"date":"2010-06-14T11:25:15","date_gmt":"2010-06-14T15:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rampantbicycle.com\/blog\/?p=11"},"modified":"2010-06-14T11:33:02","modified_gmt":"2010-06-14T15:33:02","slug":"the-most-dangerous-website-on-the-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rampantbicycle.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/the-most-dangerous-website-on-the-internet\/","title":{"rendered":"The most dangerous website on the internet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is&#8230;this website.<\/p>\n<p>When it is linked to in message board threads, cries of &#8220;NOOOO!&#8221; can be read for posts and posts thereafter.\u00c2\u00a0 People speak of it in hushed tones and warn people away from clicking links to it.\u00c2\u00a0 I once sent a link to a single page on this site in an email, and my warning went unheeded, and the person I sent it to lost some four or five hours of his life.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t listen, but I am warning you now that I am about to link to this very site.\u00c2\u00a0 Do not click any of these links unless you find yourself with time to spare.<\/p>\n<p>The website in question is the mighty <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/\">TvTropes.org<\/a>, a wiki which seeks to categorize, refine, and provide many, many examples of common tropes and tricks used in narrative media (not just television &#8211; the site&#8217;s name is something of a misnomer at this point.)\u00c2\u00a0 It is devilishly entertaining to read, and the entries have a certain quality to them of popcorn, or potato chips: you read just one more, and just one more, and just one more, and before you know it hours have passed.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;ve been having a great time, but now the bank is closed.<\/p>\n<p>For those feeling brave enough to explore &#8211; and for heaven&#8217;s sake <strong>do not click unless you have time!<\/strong> &#8211; here are a selection of portions of the wiki I have recently enjoyed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/StandardSnippet\">Standard Snippet<\/a> &#8211; You might not know it yet, but you know these songs.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/DidNotDoTheResearch\">Did Not Do The Research<\/a> &#8211; A common problem in all fictional forms, here with many iterations on the theme.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/CharacterizationTropes\">Characterization Tropes<\/a> &#8211; Pretty much every trick you have ever seen done with a character&#8217;s development will be here.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/ptitle8nd319as?from=Main.NoMrBondIExpectYouToDine\">No, Mr Bond, I Expect You To Dine<\/a> &#8211; Why do villains always do this?\u00c2\u00a0 I mean, not that I don&#8217;t enjoy watching this scene, but it happens all the time!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/SheCleansUpNicely\">She Cleans Up Nicely<\/a> &#8211; I guarantee you have seen this one approximately three thousand times.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/Mentors\">Mentors <\/a>&#8211; There is almost always one of these.\u00c2\u00a0 And it is astonishing how often <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/MentorOccupationalHazard\">this<\/a> happens to them.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/HannibalLecture\">Hannibal Lecture<\/a> &#8211; Ah, an old favorite, with many amusing associated tropes to go and click on.\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t miss <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/WorldOfCardboardSpeech\">World Of Cardboard Speech<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is just a tiny, tiny fragment of what the site has to offer, though.\u00c2\u00a0 Go forth and enjoy &#8211; just don&#8217;t forget to come up for air sometimes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is&#8230;this website.
